INFORMATION AND RESOURCES

What to Know Before Coming to ICPS

As a premier program designed for the most proficient students in math, science and engineering, ICPS holds its participants to a higher standard. Students are expected to arrive promptly to class and behave respectfully toward peers and instructors at all times.

The attendance policy allows for three total absences, as we understand that scheduling conflicts may arise on occasion. Please continue reading for more details on the program's culture and principals, including opportunities for parents to get involved.

Info for Students

Code of Conduct

These guidelines are in place to make sure that all participants have a fair, positive experience with ICPS:

  • Participants are expected to treat teachers, staff members and fellow students with respect.
  • Arriving to class on time is required.
  • Students are permitted only three absences during the program.

Students who do not follow the code of conduct may be expelled.

Attendance Policy

Each participant is entitled to a maximum of three absences without penalty. If a student misses class more than three times, they will not receive a Certificate of Completion, which means they cannot participate in our grade-appropriate robotics or research programs. We allow the three absences because we understand that things come up — planned or unplanned. There are no excused absences.

Info for Parents

Parental Workshops

We offer programming for parents during ICPS classes on certain days. Workshops cover topics such as supporting intelligent children and nurturing interest in STEM.

Here are the workshops being offered this year:

  • September 6:  Get Acquainted With ICPS. Learn about the program, understand what's expected of you and your child, and discover problem-solving activities for parents.
  • October 25:  Parenting Struggles and Solutions. Participate in a guided discussion on how to best navigate the challenges of raising talented children.
  • December 20:  Help Your Child Chart Their Path. Learn valuable strategies for helping students explore their academic and career goals.
  • January 31:  ICPS Welcomes a Guest Presenter. Expert mathematician Po-Shen Loh will run a special workshop for parents and participants.
  • March 14:  Post-ICPS Opportunities. Get an overview of our advanced program opportunities, followed by a talent show and luncheon.

Parent Volunteering

Every year, several parents of ICPS participants opt to participate in one of three committees:

  • Party Planning: We have a total of 93 students, so combined with parents and siblings, our special events can easily amass more than 200 attendees. In the past, we've asked parents to pay $25 to cover the cost of the food for the holiday party and the end of class event. There have always been a few parent volunteers who are familiar with Google docs to arrange for a sign-up sheet and someone else to collect the money. At the December luncheon, parents are asked to bring an entrée, salad, or dessert, preferably from their native Country. This makes the event very special.
  • Student Talent Show: On the last day of class, we ask the students to share one of their talents other than their mathematical skills. A parent or two on the committee organizes the event and introduces the children at the show. Children often choose to play an instrument, sing a song, do a dance, demonstrate kung fu, solve a Rubik’s cube, or put on a skit. Everyone will be blown away by the talents of so many children.
  • Fundraising: Perhaps some of the parents are experienced fundraisers and can find ways to help pay for the program so that it can remain free to all participants. We have contacted local businesses for donations, run 50/50 raffles, created baskets to raffle off, etc.

Please consider volunteering. Committees meet in on-campus lounges while the participants are in class.

By Car

From New York City and points West, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. To find the campus via GPS, enter the address "100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790."
