Technological Systems Management (TSM)

Minor in Industrial Engineering (IE)

• Admission requirements

  Admission to the industrial engineering minor requires completion of Calculus I and Calculus II (or equivalents) with a grade of C or higher, and a cumulative grade point average of 2.80 or higher.

  The industrial engineering minor requires completion of six courses (18 credits) and must include at least three courses(9 credits) that are not used to satisfy the requirements of the student’s major(s) or other minors.

  This minor may result in courses with prerequisites for some of the chosen courses meeting the minor requirements. Students who are not in majors that require these prerequisites must plan to take them in addition to the minor requirements.

  Each course taken to satisfy the requirements for the minor must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

• Specialization in industrial engineering (IE)
  The industrial engineering specialization requires completion of seven courses (21 credits). The specialization must not include courses that are used to satisfy the requirements of the student's TSM major.

Accelerated BS/MS Program

The Accelerated BS/MS program is specifically designed for technology and society students who maintain strong academic performance, enabling you to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree within five years. A key advantage of this program is the opportunity for students to count graduate-level courses taken in their senior year toward both their undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. Consequently, participants can achieve both degrees in one additional year, or two semesters, effectively streamlining your educational path.

• What are the admission requirements?
  To apply for the Accelerated BS/MS program, applicants must be technology and society students with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the time of application.
  
  Additionally, candidates are required to have completed at least three designated technology and society courses (EST202, EST 391, and EST 393) at Stony Brook, achieving an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher in these courses. Furthermore, the Graduate School mandates a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 by the end of the senior year to qualify for matriculation into the graduate program; failure to meet this criterion may result in dismissal from the program.
  
  Admission to the program is contingent upon approval from the department's Graduate Admissions Committee, which evaluates applicants based on their academic performance and readiness for graduate study.
• How to apply?

  Students are encouraged to apply to this five-year program at the end of their junior year, subject to the requirements below.

  • You must see our Graduate Program Coordinator to declare your intention to enroll.
  • The application process includes sending your resume, a statement of purpose, and at least two recommendation letters to the Graduate Program Coordinator. At least one recommendation letter must be from a current technology and society department faculty member. Your statement of purpose should be 1 to 3 pages in length and include your relevant past experience, immediate and long goals and what you hope to accomplish with a master’s degree.
  • Applicants interested in a graduate degree that cannot meet these criteria are encouraged to apply directly to the M.S. program.
  • Before the end of final semester as an undergraduate student, you must see the Graduate Program Coordinator to prepare documents to matriculate into the Graduate School. If you do not contact the Graduate Program Coordinator, we will assume you are no longer interested in continuing in the accelerated BS/MS program as a graduate student.
  • As an undergraduate, the student must receive permission from the Graduate School in order to take graduate courses that will count towards both BS and MS degrees.
  • Before completing undergraduate requirements, you will need to apply for admission to the Graduate School.

  Students that do not follow the two steps above will be terminated from the Accelerated program; if you want to enter the MS program, you will need to follow the standard admission procedures for the MS program.

• How to register for graduate courses?
  To register for graduate courses in your senior year, please follow up with the Graduate Program Coordinator.
• What happens if I leave the accelerated program?
  You will receive your BS degree when you have fulfilled the undergraduate program requirements regardless of whether you are still in the Accelerated Program or not.
